It was a secret, but leaked out at the gp32x forums minutes after e-mails form GPH.
The successor of the gp2x will be announced at IFA.

It's called the  gp2x F-200. And has the the following improvements.

I am very happy GPH decided to do something instead of letting the gp2x die.
But first: let see the quality.

Yes it is a good thing indeed!

Well let's hope it is good quality, then again it looks solid!

Craig just stated that this model was supposed to be included in the Value Pack.
With that in mind the value pack makes a bit more sense.

Oh and hope they didn't forget to add storage space for the stylus in the case...

EDIT: they did.

So it's basically a DS? GPH seems to be competing with Craig's new home-made console venture. This is made obvious with the touch-screen functionality. Too bad the D-pad looks horrendous and unusable in fighting games (espcially the new Bloodcross game), so it better still be compatible with the old cradle...

Don't think so. The touch-screen-chip was there with the launch of the First Edition. People, including me thought about adding a touch-screen film month ago. I costs them just about 12 cents to add one. :>

That's why I never wanted a D-Pad.

Ed from gp2x.de is one of the few who can play with the new gp2x, as
he is attending IFA in Berlin with GPH.

He just posted some info about the new handheld on gp32x.

quote
---------------------------
Hey ED, how does the new screen fare with the MK2 one? Better quality and viewing angle?

Same screen as MK2, just with touchscreen.

I wonder if they plan to add small improvements to the final polished product (like built-in TV-out)

Nope, they won't

Could you please describe/review the dpad in more detail?
Thanks.

Well, as you can see, basically four buttons.
At the moment, they go too far in, so you always hang in the piece if case in the middle of the DPad.
If the buttons won't go in that far in the final version, it's very well usable.

ED, any place to hide the stylus?

Nope, but it's a telescope stylus which can be easily attached with a string.
If it's not pulled out, it's about 3cm long.

Anything about RTC?Huh
With the add of the touch screen a RTC is needed. (PDA software)

No RTC.

ED, are you any good at street fighter 2, 3, alpha 1-2-3. xmen vs sf, art of fighting 3 etc?

I'm no fighter gamer, sorry. I only tried some hard parts of Cave Story, which works, but your thumb hurts afterwards. Can be fixed as described above.

Are diagonals hard to do in general? (important for precise lower blocking and many of the moves)

Hard to say at the moment, as the simulation of diagonals (yes, it simulates diagonals when you press two buttons at once) isn't finished yet.

Maybe the D-pad needs to be a bit smaller in size?

I think so, too, but that's not possible anymore.

Whats the travel distance on the actual d-pad buttons? 1, 2 or 3mm?

Well, more like 3 - 4mm at the moment, as said, faaar too much.

Please get them to fix this major "problem" before mass production! It's the 1 thing that would make quite a few of us re-buy the gp2x and makes recommending a lot easier!

I know. And I'm trying. The only thing that can be changed is the travel distance (they can't change the case anymore) which should make the DPad A LOT better!

He means either "how long does it take for the firmware to boot up?" or a rhetorical question somewhere along the lines of "How many different revisions of the GP2X is GPH going to make before they finally ditch it?"

Bootup time is about the same as with FW 2.1.1

will this F-200 have wi-fi support??, i think that's more important than a touch screen.

Nope, it doesn't have. Would have added about 20 USD to the final retail price.

also how stable is overclocking, don't want to buy a new model with a maximum of 240 mhz (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Well, with some prototypes where most don't even work with batteries, I'm not sure I should test that (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
It wouldn't be reliable.

Good old GPH, that's how we know them. Let people who know gaming test it when there aren't any changes possible anymore...

I sure hope they will get it slightly better. Ironic though: For the mk2 there were hundreds of post on how the stick sucks, and 'please get a d-pad'. Now there will be hundreds of posts on how the d-pad sucks, 'please do a stick-mod'...

Heard nothing on the price from GPH, so i assume it will be similar priced.
And to be honest, what has actually changed to justify a higher price?

Like ben pointed out:
Quote

The d-pad might even be cheaper then a stick.

Only a telescope stylus is extra, well they can drop the batteries or the other crap in the value pack.

Some photo's of the new model:
http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-gameparks-gp2x-f-200/

The new firmware looks slick. And do i see a battery-indicator?
Don't like the silvery edge, looks like it's going to come of due to aggressive sweat...

Very much agreed. Or just plain black like the 'old' one.

Don't forget: It's still GPH. They can't do everything right. Wink
